Buddy and Alex and Training
So this week I am helping watch my 3 year old nephew while his parents take a trip to Nebraska. I thought this week would help Buddy, my 6 month old puppy learn how he is to act around children, since one day I will have my own and what him to be good with kids. Now he has been around kids a lot but never really ones he is basically the same size as, and defiantly weighs more.
So the first few days went great, of course there was the occasional fighting over toys because Buddy is not use to not all the toys being his. Also Buddy seemed to take the abuse of a three year old well. Alex would hit him, jump on him, and Buddy just took it, a few times Buddy just seemed to get tired of him and jump on the bed and sit with me.
Then on Monday Alex was running around outside with Buddy, and Buddy recognized this as a time to play. And the way he plays with Snickers, another dog in the house, is defiantly different then how we want him to play with Alex. So he started nibbling on Alex's clothes, which made Alex giggle, and in turn excites Buddy, so he started to pull. Then Alex's pants dropped to his ankles and Buddy grabbed hold of the crouch of the pants and began to drag Alex around. And poor Alex was scared to death. Buddy was scolded and Alex consoled, and after a nap they were both calmed down and best friends again.
Then yesterday Alex was throwing cars off the counter and Buddy saw this as fetch. Now Alex didn't want to share his cars so he went to grab it back, and of course Buddy thought tug a war. So Alex tried to hold it up high, Buddy tried jumping for it and therefor caught Alex's lip. This time Buddy was put into his kennel to wait for Daddy to come home. Then when Correy got home it was a nice day so we took Buddy outside with Alex and two cousins that had come over. We watched him carefully and were always within collar reach of him. And if he gave a hint of jumping or grabbing we stopped him and this method seemed way more effective.
